SCOTUS Must Uphold Bump Stock Ban

Washington DC —  GIFFORDS Law Center, the legal arm of the gun violence prevention group GIFFORDS, released the following statement after the oral arguments before the Supreme Court in Garland v. Cargill. GIFFORDS Law Center, along with other gun violence prevention groups, jointly filed an amicus brief urging the Court to uphold the federal bump stock ban, which was cited during the oral argument. The brief was drafted by the law firm of O’Melveny & Myers.

“Bump stocks are machine guns. It’s plain and simple. Under the National Firearms Act, that makes bump stocks illegal too. We have tragically seen the immense amount of carnage these weapons can produce at the 1 October mass shooting in Las Vegas. We urge the court to do what is right and uphold the ban on bump stocks.”

Robert Gipson, Las Vegan, Litigation Fellow:

“As a Las Vegan, I will never forget the 1 October shooting and the impact it had on thousands of people. After the shooting, I became the first Legal Victim Advocate at the Vegas Strong Resiliency Center. Our mission was non-partisan: it was about putting survivors first. My role was to provide system navigation and access to civil legal services. I spent innumerable hours talking to survivors and helping them recover from the horrors of that day. Invalidating the ATF’s bump stock rule would undermine public safety and overlook the devastating impact of 1 October. The Supreme Court must consider the reality of what a bump stock can do and make a survivor-centered decision.”
