GIFFORDS: President Biden Fighting for Safe Latino Communities
President Biden doubles down on the need to end gun violence in his State of the Union
Washington DC —GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released a statement following President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address.
In tonight’s speech, President Joe Biden made the case for commonsense gun laws to curb American gun violence, which disproportionately impacts the Latino community. From 1999 to 2022, over 74,000 Latinos died as a result of the gun violence epidemic in the United States, an appalling statistic that exposes the severe impact gun violence has on Latino Americans.
Samantha Barrios, GIFFORDS Florida State Director
“Across the country, too many Latino households have lost a loved one to gun violence. According to a 2022 survey from The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention, 53% of Latinos are ‘very concerned’ about this issue in their communities, or, in simpler terms, they live in constant fear. Fortunately, President Biden has led the strongest gun safety administration in history and tonight reiterated his commitment to ending gun violence. Latinos know we can count on him to fight for saving lives and safer communities.”
President Biden backed up his commitment to fighting gun violence with action in 2022 when he signed the historic Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first significant federal gun safety law enacted in nearly 30 years. GIFFORDS was proud to partner with the President on this historic legislation and continue to keep those communities hit the hardest at the center of our work. Latino voters support President Biden’s gun safety record and also demand for more to be done. Surveys from The Washington Post and Ipsos revealed that the vast majority of Hispanic Americans support measures such as background checks on all gun sales and laws that temporarily remove firearms from people found to be a risk to themselves or others.
