GIFFORDS Florida applauds $2.5 million in community violence intervention funding in state budget
MIAMI — Today, GIFFORDS Florida, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, applauded the inclusion of $2.5 million for community violence intervention funding in the state’s budget. After years of GIFFORDS and allies working to educate lawmakers about the importance of funding community violence intervention, Florida legislators included it in the final budget for the first time ever.
“Gun violence disproportionately impacts communities of color, but too often the programs that work directly with these communities are left out of state funding. That changes in Florida today. For the first time ever, the final state budget included $2.5 million for community violence interventions. This is a big win and a result of years of advocacy and education. But this is only a start,” said GIFFORDS Florida State Director Samanatha Barrios. “We must continue funding community violence programs that use homegrown peacemakers to stop violence, one life at a time.”
