House GOP pushes to ban gun violence prevention studies

Washington GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, condemned House Republicans on the Appropriations Committee for approving an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2025 Labor, Health, and Human Services funding bill that would prohibit money for research on gun violence prevention and limit research to the treatment of gunshot injuries. The amendment was introduced by Congressman Andrew Clyde (GA-09), who operates two gun stores.

“It’s clear that MAGA Republicans in the House care more about the gun industry’s profits than American lives. It’s no surprise that gun dealer Congressman Clyde has introduced this reckless amendment. Meanwhile, his home state of Georgia saw more than 2,000 people die from gun violence in 2022 and every single day Americans are dying across the country from preventable violence,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “In 2019, for the first time in decades, Congress funded federal studies on this nationwide epidemic, because of GIFFORDS’ advocacy. Stopping these critical studies will cost lives.”
