In Michigan, VP Harris shows clear contrast with Trump on gun violence

WASHINGTON — Today, GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, praised Vice President Kamala Harris for remarks on gun violence in a conversation with Oprah Winfrey in Farmington Hills, Michigan.

“Kamala Harris last night reminded voters that she is the only candidate who will protect our kids and communities from gun violence. From convicting perpetrators of gun homicides as a prosecutor to standing up to the gun lobby as vice president, she has fought for our safety her whole career,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “Our laws are riddled with loopholes that allow dangerous people to easily and legally access guns, and Donald Trump wants to keep it that way. Only Kamala Harris will close those loopholes and restore Americans’ freedom to live free from gun violence.”

BACKGROUND:

Speaking to Winfrey and an audience of voters, Harris said, “I think for far too long on the issue of gun violence, some people have been pushing a really false choice: to suggest you’re either in favor of the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone’s guns away. I’m in favor of the Second Amendment and I’m in favor of assault weapons bans, universal background checks, red flag laws.”

“My opponent, when he was told about a shooting of a young girl, you know what he said? ‘Get over it.’ ‘Get over it.’ No, we’re not getting over it, no. And to the point, everyone should have a sense of collective responsibility for the children of our community and understand their right to live and be safe,” Harris added.
