Gun safety champion Kristen McDonald Rivet elected to Michigan’s 8th Congressional District
WASHINGTON – GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, congratulated Rep.-elect Kristen McDonald Rivet on her victory in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District. GIFFORDS endorsed the Michigan state senator as part of its commitment to electing and supporting gun safety champions in 2024.
“I am pleased to congratulate Rep.-elect Kristen McDonald Rivet on her crucial victory in Michigan. Her win will be critical to continuing the progress we’ve made on gun violence in Congress,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “GIFFORDS was proud to support her election and we look forward to working with her in the fight to end gun violence and create safer communities for our children.”
Throughout her career, Rep.-elect McDonald Rivet has fought tirelessly to give back to her community and help people across her state. A core part of that work has been to prevent the kind of senseless gun violence that has devastated too many Michigan families.
As the executive director of Michigan Head Start, chief of staff for Michigan’s Department of Education, and vice president of the Skillman Foundation, McDonald Rivet has always worked to make big changes in Michigan to improve outcomes for children. Her first act in the Michigan State Senate was leading the successful effort to pass commonsense gun safety laws that require safe gun storage, implement universal background checks and allow courts to temporarily remove guns from people deemed a risk to themselves or others.
