GIFFORDS PAC endorses gun safety champions in key special elections for Virginia Legislature
WASHINGTON — Today, GIFFORDS PAC, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, endorsed two prominent gun safety champions in must-win special elections for Virginia Legislature slated for Jan. 7, 2025. Delegate Kannan Srinivasan is running for the Virginia Senate in SD-32 and JJ Singh for the Virginia House of Delegates in HD-26. Both vacancies stemmed from the election of Congressman-elect Suhas Subramanyam, who GIFFORDS PAC proudly supported in his victorious bid for the U.S. House.
“Voters across the Commonwealth have an opportunity to strengthen the gun safety majorities they sent to Richmond in 2023 by electing Delegate Kannan Srinivasan and JJ Singth to the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates. Both of these candidates are prepared to continue the fight to save lives and pass additional strong gun laws that protect communities from harm—just as our partners across Virginia have done in recent years by enacting a landmark red flag law and strengthening background checks. I’m proud to stand with each of them as they bring home a victory in these critically important races,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords.
“I am honored to have the endorsement of GIFFORDS PAC, a leading voice in the fight against gun violence,” saidDel. Kannan Srinivasan. “As Delegate, I have fought to pass commonsense gun reforms that save lives and protect our communities. In the Senate, I will continue to champion evidence-based solutions including strengthening red flag laws, banning assault weapons, and investing in programs that address the root causes of gun violence to create a safer future for Loudoun and Virginia.”
“I am incredibly proud to receive the support of GIFFORDS PAC,” said JJ Singh. “I am running for office to keep our community safe from gun violence — the leading cause of death for our kids. Together we can and we must pass commonsense gun safety legislation in Richmond, like measures to strengthen our red flag laws, require safe storage, and ban the sale of high-capacity assault weapons.”
As the first Indian American immigrant to serve in the Virginia House of Delegates, Del. Kannan Srinivasan passed eight bills last year—nearly all with bipartisan support—and helped put legislation into law banning auto-sears and establishing a misdemeanor to own and sell firearms with altered or destroyed serial numbers. In the Senate, he’ll work to ban the sale of ghost guns across Virginia, disarm domestic abusers, and continue to push back against the gun lobby—which has gone largely unchecked given its undue protections under the law.
Born and raised in Northern Virginia, JJ Singh has also dedicated his career to public service and empowering others to live up to their fullest potential. Throughout his career, from his time with the Peace Corps to his time in the White House Office of Management and Budget, and later as an economic advisor in the U.S. Senate and a member of the Loudoun County Economic Development Advisory Commission, Singh has worked with leaders across the political spectrum to build a safer future. Now, he’s committed to doing the same in the House of Delegates, where he’ll work to fund lifesaving community violence intervention programs and champion legislation to protect students across the Commonwealth.
