Gabby Giffords offers reflections 14 years after Tucson shooting

Tucson, Ariz. — Ahead of Jan. 8, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords released the following statement marking 14 years since she and 18 others were shot during a “Congress on Your Corner” event. Two years after the shooting, former Congresswoman Giffords founded the gun violence prevention organization GIFFORDS, which is marking its 12th anniversary. To remember that day, Congresswoman Giffords is attending a bell ringing at the January 8th Memorial in Tucson.

“Fourteen years ago my life changed forever, as did so many others. Not a day goes by where I don’t think of the six people who were tragically killed on Jan. 8, 2011. They are always with me.  In the face of this senseless act of violence, I remain inspired by the courage that Tucson has shown in the intervening years,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords.

“Too many Americans have had their lives turned upside down from gun violence. Since we founded GIFFORDS in 2013, we’ve made tremendous progress – passing more than 700 gun safety bills in nearly every state. Still, we have a lot of work left to do. As the gun lobby’s influence wanes in Washington and statehouses nationwide, we will continue to push for commonsense solutions like background checks on all gun sales, red flag laws, and investments in community violence intervention programs. Change comes inch by inch, but I know that together, we can create a safer America,” Giffords added.
