Senator John Hickenlooper’s career has been nothing short of multifaceted, from working as a geologist and opening numerous businesses to being a political outsider who became mayor of Denver, and eventually climbing the ranks to lead his state as both governor and now as a United States senator. Through it all, Senator Hickenlooper has consistently worked to put people first and make life better for everyday Coloradans while addressing the many issues they face—including high levels of crime and senseless violence that have plagued too many communities across the Centennial State.
In his many public service roles, Senator Hickenlooper has been an unparalleled champion in moving necessary, commonsense gun safety measures from ideas to reality—all while respecting the rights of responsible gun owners. In 2012, a gunman killed 12 people in a movie theater in Aurora during his time as governor of Colorado. In the wake of this devastating shooting, Senator Hickenlooper signed commonsense legislation into law which placed limits on ammunition magazines and required background checks on all gun sales statewide.
Senator Hickenlooper has continued this necessary advocacy in his current role in the Senate, where he has proven to be a crucial partner in passing landmark bills like the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act—which helped address the boyfriend loophole, expanded background checks for young gun purchasers, and made historic investment in community-based mental health and violence prevention programs. He’s also supported additional measures like the assault weapons ban, the Background Check Expansion Act, and Ethan’s Law. If reelected, he will continue to be a tireless advocate for their passage so we can all rest easier knowing that dangerous weapons are off our streets and out of the hands of children for good.
In 2020, Senator Hickenlooper’s election was one of GIFFORDS’s top priorities, and because of his strong record of leadership in his state, we were able to flip his seat blue and unseat one of the gun lobby’s biggest enablers. Everyday since he was sworn in, he’s shown he is the champion Coloradans need fighting on their behalf in Washington DC. We must send him back to Capitol Hill next November—with him leading the way on gun safety, we know progress is within reach.
