Louisiana has some of the country’s weakest gun laws and has repeatedly suffered some of the highest gun death rates. Enacting even modest gun safety legislation would go a long way to improve community safety in the state.

In spite of its general lack of firearm regulation, in recent years the state has enacted laws to strengthen some protections for survivors of domestic violence. In 2022, Louisiana had the second highest gun death rate among the states. In an average year, 1,153 people die from gun violence in the state. That means that someone dies from gun violence every 8 hours. Thirty-nine percent of those deaths are gun suicides, and 58% are gun homicides. In Louisiana, the rate of gun deaths increased 46% from 2013 to 2022, compared to a 36% increase nationwide.
