Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Responds to President Trump’s Tweet Suggesting Violence

May 29, 2020 — With unrest continuing in Minneapolis after the death of George Floyd and shots fired at protests in Denver and Louisville, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, founder of the gun violence prevention group Giffords, reacted to President Donald Trump’s threat to use armed violence against protestors.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:

“As Americans are rightfully demanding justice for the tragic loss of black lives, Donald Trump is suggesting that citizens be shot in the streets of Minneapolis. This is not leadership.

“In threatening violence, the president fanned flames of racism and hatred, showing a complete disregard for the lives of Americans, especially Americans of color. He is not a leader and should not be our president. We must beat him at the ballot box in November.

“Our work does not stop there. We must work to root out racism from our system of policing that too often fails to protect black Americans. Law enforcement accountability and reform will build trust and reduce violence, making a safer and more peaceful country for us all.”
