Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Senate Candidate Theresa Greenfield Rally for Universal Background Checks

September 10, 2020 — Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, co-founder of the gun violence prevention group Giffords, and Senate candidate Theresa Greenfield joined Giffords Executive Director Peter Ambler and veteran and gun owner Erica Fletcher in a virtual rally to elect a gun safety Senate. As part of the larger Road to Universal Background Checks Tour, the group spoke with Iowa voters about the importance of electing a Senate majority ready to take action on universal background checks.

“Theresa Greenfield will be a gun safety champion for Iowa families as their next U.S. Senator,” said Peter Ambler, Giffords Executive Director. “Like Gabby, Theresa understands the importance of responsible gun ownership. Theresa knows that there are commonsense solutions like universal background checks that we can all agree on that respect the Second Amendment while also protecting our communities. While her opponent relies on NRA funding Theresa has refused to take corporate PAC money and will fight for Iowans instead of special interests. We are proud to stand with Theresa in her candidacy to unite Iowans and bring their voice to the Senate.”

Speaking to thousands of viewers in Iowa and nationwide, the panel stressed the importance of protecting the gun safety majority in the House and electing a gun safety majority to the Senate so that universal background checks can finally become law.

“I grew up on my family’s farm, where I learned to shoot and learned all about safe and responsible gun ownership,” said Theresa Greenfield. “Ours is a state of responsible gun owners, but as I’ve visited with families across Iowa during this campaign, I have heard from countless moms and dads who tell me they’re afraid for their kids and know we need to do more to keep our communities safe. In the Senate, I’ll work with anyone to take sensible, bipartisan action to expand background checks, close dangerous loopholes, and make sure we’re investing in research to better understand and find meaningful solutions to end gun violence.”

Theresa Greenfield has known the values of hardwork and family ever since growing up on a small-town farm. She worked hard to put herself through college and become an urban planner who worked to support local residents. With her son in the army, she knows that some weapons should be left to the battlefield. She understands the importance of commonsense gun safety that keeps us all safe.

“We need a senator who will represent Iowans’ strong tradition of responsible gun ownership,” said Erica Fletcher. “As a veteran, gun owner, and mom, I know that we must do more to pass commonsense gun safety legislation that protects our communities and our rights as gun owners. I am proud to support Theresa Greenfield in her run to be the next senator from Iowa.”
Giffords also released new Public Policy Polling surveying Iowa voters in conjunction with the tour.  According to the poll, nearly 8 in 10 Iowa voters support universal background checks. A majority of voters said that a candidate’s support for universal background checks laws made it more likely that they would vote for that candidate. Only 7% of those polled said they would be more likely to vote for the candidate who opposed background checks.
