GUN SAFETY VICTORIES: Joe Biden & Kamala Harris Bring the Strongest Gun Safety Platform in History to the White House

Congresswoman Giffords celebrates the victories of President-elect Joe Biden, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, and gun safety champions up and down the ballot

Washington, DC Giffords PAC, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, congratulates President-elect Joe Biden, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, Senator-elect Hickenlooper, and gun safety champions across the country on their victories. Together, they will lead our country to a safer, stronger future where all American live free from gun violence.

“I am so proud to congratulate my friends Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on their historic victory,” said former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. “Confronted by despair, our country summoned hope. Now, we have a president who has the empathy to be a transformative leader during the difficult days ahead. And by his side is Sen. Kamala Harris, who, as our first female vice president, will continue to make history. When I was shot, Joe Biden was there for me, and I know he and Kamala Harris will be there for every American as our next president and vice president.”

Biden and Harris ran on the strongest gun safety platform in the country’s history. Voters responded, casting over 70 million votes for Biden and Harris—more than any other presidential ticket in American history. They led the way with a bold vision of a united America where every community can feel safe. Throughout their impressive careers, they have both proven they have the courage to take on the gun lobby and stand up for gun safety.

Other Major Victories

Gun safety champion and Senator-elect John Hickenlooper also ran on a promise to take action. Flipping the Senate seat in Colorado was a top priority for Giffords, and his decisive victory early on election night proves that gun safety continues to be a winning issue for the state.

Giffords PAC launched a $1.25 million independent expenditure targeting incumbent Gardner’s cozy relationship to both Trump and the NRA at the expense of his constituents. Former Congresswoman Giffords also joined Hickenlooper for the Colorado stop of the Road to Universal Background Checks tour, a series of innovative virtual events that highlighted the importance of passing universal background checks through the Senate and into law.

In addition, Americans elected and reelected House members to continue the progress of the gun safety majority. After making historic progress with H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, the winning gun safety candidates will continue to lead the way to stronger, safer communities.

“Today’s results are a victory for continued gun safety progress,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “We flipped the House in 2018 with a clear promise to pass universal background checks and take action on gun safety. Our gun safety champions lived up to that promise, and they will  continue the fight. I congratulate the winning candidates and look forward to working with them to pass lifesaving gun safety solutions into law.”

Giffords looks forward to working with President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and gun safety champions in Congress in the fight to end gun violence.
