Giffords Praises President Biden for Taking Executive Action to Address Gun Violence

Washington DCGiffords, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, praised President Biden for the series of executive actions on gun violence announced tonight.

“President Biden promised to take action on gun violence in his first 100 days in office, and today he delivered,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “Days like today are why we fought so hard to bring a gun safety champion to the White House. These executive actions help address a crisis that devastates communities across the country on a daily basis. Today we have hope that a brighter future is in store. Thank you, President Biden.”

Congresswoman Giffords also shared a statement in support of President Biden’s nomination of David Chipman to serve as Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Last week, Giffords also praised the Biden administration for including $5 billion in funding for lifesaving community violence intervention programs.

In January, Giffords released a series of memos in partnership with the Center for American Progress (CAP) providing meaningful guidance on what executive actions should be considered as well as policy and legal analysis on how best to accomplish those priorities. These materials provided a roadmap for how best to accomplish more than three dozen ideas for executive action, including creating an interagency task force on gun violence prevention, prioritizing community violence prevention within the Department of Justice, and commencing a rulemaking process to ban “ghost guns.”

It is a testament to President Biden and Vice President Harris’s commitment to gun safety that they have made this issue a priority while navigating the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the fastest mass vaccination campaign in the nation’s history. Giffords endorsed Joe Biden for president in March 2020, noting that over his decades of public service, President Biden has always made gun safety a priority. Both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris released robust gun safety plans during the primary campaign, making their ticket the strongest presidential gun safety ticket in history.
