Giffords Celebrates Passage of Gun Safety Legislation in Delaware
Dover, DE — Giffords, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, lauded Governor John Carney, Speaker Peter Schwartzkopf, House Majority Leader Val Longhurst, Senate President Pro Tempore David Sokola, Senate Majority Leader Brian Townsend, and House Majority Whip Larry Mitchell for responding to the tragic events in Buffalo and Uvalde by passing a critical package of bills that tighten Delaware’s gun laws and close loopholes.
“After senseless mass shootings that continue to show up on the front pages, we are thankful that leaders and groups like the Delaware Coalition Against Gun Violence are taking the initiative to protect our communities,” said Sean Holihan, Giffords State Legislative Director. “This legislation will help ensure that families will no longer have to fear grocery stores and that children will no longer fear classrooms. We thank Governor Carney, Speaker Schwartzkopf, President Pro Tempore Sokola, Majority Leaders Longhurst and Townsend, Majority Whip Mitchell, Senator Nicole Poore, and Representatives Bentz and Osienski for their swift efforts to pass this package of legislation and urge elected officials in other states to follow their lead.”
This bill package includes legislation that improves the quality of the state’s background checks system (FTAP) by having a state agency conduct the checks in addition to NICS. It also holds gun manufacturers and dealers liable for reckless or negligent actions that lead to gun violence, raises the minimum age for the purchase of most firearms and long guns, limits high capacity magazines, and bans assault weapons and “glock switches” that transform a semiautomatic weapon into a machine gun.
