Giffords PAC Hosted ¡Tu Voto Cuenta! Conversation and Business Stop-By in North Carolina with Cheri Beasley and Leaders from Latinos con Beasley

CHARLOTTE, NC — Yesterday, Giffords PAC, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, hosted a conversation with Giffords Senior Advisor and Former Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel Powell, Candidate for US Senate Cheri Beasley, Candidate for US Congress Jeff Jackson, and community leaders highlighting the importance of gun violence prevention this election cycle, especially among Hispanic and Latino voters. Following the event, panelists met with local entrepreneur Manolo Betancur and other Latino small business owners at Manolo’s Bakery in Charlotte.

“Gun violence disproportionately affects young Latino men who experience some of the highest rates of gun violence,” said Giffords Senior Advisor and Former Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel Powell. “Gun violence is currently the leading cause of death for Hispanic male youth ages 15 to 19. That’s why it is so important that everyone votes and sends gun safety champions like Cheri Beasley to Washington DC. Polling shows that Americans overwhelmingly want commonsense gun safety measures. Voters want leaders who will fight for a future without violence—not those who campaign with the gun lobby’s cash and then do their bidding in office. Let’s elect Cheri Beasley to the United States Senate!”

The Latinos con Beasley ¡Tu Voto Cuenta! roundtable conversation was hosted by Aldersgate Demócrats and Hispanic American Democrats of Mecklenburg County (HADMC). Cheri Beasley was also joined by State Senator and Democratic Candidate for Congress Jeff Jackson, Commissioner Susan Rodriguez-McDowell, and Maritza Ortiz, 2nd Vice Chair of HADMC.

Research by Giffords shows that on average, 11 Hispanic people die from gun violence every day and almost half of all Latino youth in major US cities live less than a mile away from a gun homicide that occurred in the past year. Gun violence in the Hispanic community has been on the rise, increasing 66% since 2014.
