GIFFORDS Calls on Nashville Metropolitan Council to Reinstate Rep. Justin Jones
Washington DC — Today GIFFORDS, the gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released a statement of support ahead of a vote by the Nashville Metropolitan Council to reinstate Rep. Justin Jones. Last week in an unprecedented, undemocratic move, the Republican majority expelled Rep. Jones and Rep. Justin Pearson and tried to expel Rep. Gloria Johnson after they had the courage to stand up and call for action to fight gun violence. GIFFORDS stands with the Tennessee Three.
Peter Ambler, GIFFORDS Executive Director:
“The Republican majority in Tennessee put the feelings of the gun lobby ahead of democracy and the lives of Tennesseans last week when they unjustly expelled Reps. Jones and Pearson. Tonight, the Nashville Metropolitan Council has the opportunity to do what is right and reinstate the duly elected Rep. Jones to his seat. Rep. Jones was elected by his constituents to represent them. He did that by calling for action to address gun violence. GIFFORDS supports the Tennessee Three and we are committed to helping Reps. Jones and Pearson continue their fight for gun safety.”
In 2022, GIFFORDS launched a Guns and Democracy project to highlight the role that gun violence and armed intimidation play in the weakening of democracy and the exercise of constitutional rights. The project also points legislators and the public towards policy solutions that will help strengthen, rather than weaken, our democratic institutions.
