No surprise, the gun industry pushes to dismantle White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention
Office was created for a whole-of-government approach to address public health crisis
WASHINGTON — GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, responded to the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s (NSSF) call for President Trump to dismantle the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. The Office of Gun Violence Prevention was first created by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to create a coordinated and sustained federal effort to address all aspects of gun violence in the United States – now the leading cause of death for kids.
“It’s no surprise to anyone that the NSSF, whose principal mission is firearm industry profits, is now pushing to shutter the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention – proving, once again, that the industry cares more about lining their pockets than they do about saving lives,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “The Office of Gun Violence Prevention has been a first of its kind federal government effort to coordinate with states and federal officials to stop violence, invest in community intervention programs, respond to shootings, and support survivors. Shutting down the Office of Gun Violence Prevention would be a severe blow to public safety. Americans deserve a government that prioritizes saving lives over the interests of the gun industry, and we strongly urge the incoming administration to keep this critical office in place.”
