NEW: GIFFORDS launches data tool for gun violence statistics
The new resource provides an extensive, detailed and accessible way to understand the U.S. gun violence epidemic through numbers
WASHINGTON — GIFFORDS Law Center, the legal arm of the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released a new interactive digital resource compiling and analyzing national gun violence data and statistics. The tool will allow researchers, policymakers, and the public to access critical information about the gun violence crisis.
The site, which can be found at giffords.org/stats, analyzes mortality data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as other federal and private sources. Data is broken down by demographic characteristics, location, intent, and issue, allowing readers to easily understand complex data and to visualize the many ways gun violence harms communities across the country.
“This newly displayed data clearly shows the catastrophic consequences gun violence has on all Americans, especially our most vulnerable communities. Ensuring that the public has access to this information is more critical now than ever before,” said Kelly Drane, Research Director at GIFFORDS Law Center. “This administration is already erasing facts about gun violence and crime from public view because if you acknowledge the severity of this crisis, you are forced to take action on it. So in the meantime, we’ll be here to provide data on community violence, mass shootings, domestic violence, hate crimes, and more, because with a fuller understanding of the facts, we are better able to save lives.”
The resource is intended for use by media, educators, lawmakers, advocates, and concerned Americans who are interested in understanding the full impact of gun violence. Additionally, a new Gun Violence Data Dashboards page, which pulls gun death information from as far back as 1999, offers an even deeper dive into gun death data at the national, state, and county levels that researchers and reporters will find useful.
The page lays out a number of striking statistics, including:
- In 2023, both the rate and number of gun suicides—27,300—reached a 40-year high.
- Black Americans are almost 13 times more likely than white Americans to die by gun homicide.
- Gun access doubles the risk of homicide and triples the risk of suicide.
- In 2020, gun violence became the leading cause of death among children overall. Since 2006, gun violence has been the leading cause of death for Black children.
- Every year, more than 700 American women are shot to death by intimate partners—more than one every 12 hours.
