GIFFORDS: Questions every congressional Republican must answer this August recess
WASHINGTON — GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, is demanding Republican members of Congress answer for the unwavering support of six months of dangerous, regressive lawmaking under President Trump’s anti-safety regime. Republicans have actively endangered the public by effectively legalizing machine guns, removing safeguards on gun silencers, letting rogue gun dealers off the hook, and sitting silently as the president illegally ripped away more than $1 billion in school mental health and community violence intervention funding. “Congressional Republicans are avoiding townhall meetings because they know voters won’t like what they hear. If they refuse to answer constituents’ questions about gun crime and public safety, GIFFORDS is happy to give them the opportunity to answer ours,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown.
GIFFORDS is asking questions. Republicans owe constituents answers.
- From burying Jeffrey Epstein documents to firing the CDC experts who study firearm deaths and injuries, and removing a memorial of police killed by guns, the Trump administration is more interested in covering up horrific crimes than stopping them. Why haven’t you stood up to the administration on behalf of crime victims?
- The Trump administration cut nearly $1 billion from school mental health programs championed by Republicans after 19 children and two educators were murdered at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Will you fight to protect children in your state?
- The Trump administration effectively legalized machine guns. Will you do anything to keep constituents safe from this new threat?
- Thanks to a provision hidden in Trump’s “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” gun silencers, sawed-off shotguns and even covert firearms—like those hidden inside umbrellas or walking canes—are now more accessible than ever. Do you believe that people should have access to these weapons and what have you done to ensure they won’t cost innocent people their lives?
- The ATF is the only federal law enforcement agency tasked with keeping us safe from gun crime, yet the Trump administration wants to gut it by 40%. It has already loosened enforcement against rogue gun dealers who knowingly break the laws. If President Trump and his gun industry CEO donors get their way, there will be almost no oversight of the gun industry. You say you want to protect public safety—will you stand up to Trump gutting law enforcement support and funding?
- Dangerous people having unchecked access to guns has Americans increasingly on edge about carjackings, road rage, mass shootings and random acts of violence. Will you change course and support popular policies to stop gun crime, or continue to take orders from gun industry CEO donors?
- The Trump administration has cut hundreds of millions of dollars dedicated to community violence intervention programs, despite these proven programs having been passed into law with bipartisan support. Why have you said nothing to defend these programs?
- Every day, more than 125 Americans die from gun violence—that’s nearly 46,000 Americans each year. You talk about law and order, but why have you done nothing to stop gun crime, and instead made it even easier for dangerous people to access guns?
- When your constituents are killed in otherwise preventable shootings because your party refused to pass commonsense gun safety laws, what will you do?
