Iowa at a Crossroads
In Iowa, and all across America, citizens are demanding that our leaders keep us safe. But state lawmakers want to radically change our Constitution and erode our existing gun laws.
Consider Iowa’s background checks system to help keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people like felons and domestic abusers. It works. But it’s endangered by the proposed Constitutional amendment.
Why it’s Dangerous
The proposed amendment would make it much easier to challenge Iowa’s gun laws in court. That could mean frivolous litigation, and changes to lifesaving gun regulations that are clearly constitutional — like preventing domestic abusers from owning firearms or laws regulating gun sales to minors.
Moreover, the proposed amendment is dangerously vague. It doesn’t define “arms,” making it harder to regulate extremely dangerous weapons such as bump stocks and machine guns.
This amendment is an unprecedented, dangerous, and radical policy that would make Iowans less safe. We need to make sure it doesn’t become enshrined in our Constitution.
What You Can Do
It’s time to reach out and tell lawmakers to protect our Constitution. Our leaders should focus on better protecting Iowa families from gun violence instead of laying the groundwork for eliminating laws that work to keep us safe.
Tell your state legislators you support strong gun safety laws including background checks.
Keep our families and our communities safe from gun violence: Say no to changing Iowa’s Constitution.
