For Congresswoman Jahana Hayes, championing gun violence prevention is deeply personal.
As both an educator and mother in Connecticut at the time of the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, she understands the immediate need for sensible gun safety regulation at a visceral level. As the wife of a longtime police officer, Congresswoman Hayes also knows that lawful gun ownership and common sense gun laws should go hand in hand , and that Congress has a responsibility to protect Americans by passing life-saving laws.
In Congress, Representative Hayes’s first-ever resolution was to prohibit the use of federal funds to arm teachers. In the years since, she has also introduced legislation to prevent school-based gun violence and improve data collection on school shootings. On the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, Congresswoman Hayes has rallied her colleagues around historic bipartisan legislation, like the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, to implement background checks for all gun purchases, and the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act—which was the first major gun safety legislation to be signed into law in nearly 30 years.
Representative Hayes’s work did not stop there. Throughout her time in Congress, she has continued to support reforms that would stop the proliferation of ghost guns and incentivize the safe storage of firearms. She has consistently called for the allocation of federal funding to research gun violence, and has supported bills to expand mental health resources to help those who may turn to violence or inflict harm on themselves with a firearm.
