Congresswoman Laura Gillen has devoted her career to helping others and fighting for justice. In 2017, after a career in commercial and criminal litigation, she became the first Democrat elected to lead her town in more than 100 years when she became Hempstead Town Supervisor. And in 2024, she made history again, flipping a critically important congressional seat from red to blue by prioritizing the need to save lives from gun violence and fighting against the NRA’s radical right-wing agenda.

Like far too many Americans, the issue of gun violence is personal for Congresswoman Gillen. After losing a friend to senseless gun violence, she’s turned her pain into action and doubled down on efforts to improve public safety. Having participated in a pro bono program where she represented victims of domestic violence, Congresswoman Gillen understands that we must disarm domestic abusers and close dangerous loopholes in our laws that make it possible for bad actors to get their hands on deadly weapons. In Washington DC, she’s been a vocal proponent for these reforms at the federal level as a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. Congresswoman Gillen also knows that responsible gun ownership and sensible gun safety legislation are not mutually exclusive, and in Congress she’s been a tireless supporter of safe storage legislation that would prevent the accidental or reckless use of firearms. She supports universal background checks, and if reelected, she will fight to make these policies the law of the land in a new gun safety majority. 

This fall, achieving that potential majority in the House will require New York voters to mobilize and send principled champions like Laura Gillen back to Washington DC. With her help leading the way on this issue, a safer future is within reach for New York families.
