Candidate
Mary Gay Scanlon
US House
Pennsylvania
— 5th District Democrat
Incumbent2024
Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon has long been a gun safety advocate—on Mother’s Day in 2000, she led a group of women from Delaware County to Washington DC to join the Million Mom March. While her determination to tackle this issue goes back decades, Representative Scanlon redoubled her efforts to end America’s epidemic of gun violence after being personally confronted with it during a carjacking in 2021. In the wake of the incident, Congresswoman Scanlon called for the passage of commonsense gun safety measures and voiced support for needed investments in community policing, mental health services, and initiatives that would reduce poverty and keep Pennsylvanians off the streets. True to form, her words were followed with quick action.
In Congress, Representative Scanlon has played a key role on the House Judiciary Committee and worked tirelessly to pass lifesaving measures like universal background checks and legislation to close major loopholes in our gun laws that have allowed individuals who have committed domestic abuse and those who seek to cause harm to purchase guns. Representative Scanlon also introduced her own legislation to prevent gun sellers from circumventing the terms of services of technology companies by making it illegal to fraudulently sell firearms and ammunition online. She has also called on ATF to more adequately enforce federal firearms laws and provide needed oversight of the firearms industry. In 2022, Representative Scanlon joined colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which became the first major gun safety legislation signed into law in nearly 30 years.
This November, we need to flip the House and send key champions like Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon back to Washington in 2025. We know she will continue to find the courage to act to end gun violence and protect children and families across her state—and with her helping lead the charge on this issue, we know a safer future is within reach.
