Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Announces Virginia Political Stops in Support of Gun Safety Candidates
Washington, DC — As gun safety continues to receive an outpouring of support in the Commonwealth, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, founder of Giffords, the gun violence prevention organization, announced a series of visits across Virginia to support Democrats in key districts ahead of the election in November. The former Congresswoman’s political tour also comes with a $60,000 investment in supporting VA House Democrats, as well as contributions to the statewide races.
“Leaders in Virginia have made significant progress on passing life saving gun safety laws. This progress cannot be taken for granted, especially as the nation experiences a tragic surge in deadly violence. Virginians have the opportunity to keep moving ahead on making communities safer across the state and gun safety is on the ballot in 2021,” said former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. “These leaders have the courage to act on gun violence and we need them more than ever. I’m excited to be back in the Commonwealth to support inspiring gun safety candidates.”
On Tuesday September 21st, Congresswoman Giffords will be joined by Majority Leader Charniele Herring and candidates Delegate Elizabeth Guzman, Michelle Moldonado, Danica Roem and Brianna Sewell at 5 pm in Manassas for a volunteer kick-off event. The former Congresswoman will also stop by a campaign event with Delegates Helmer, Hope, and Lopez On Thursday September 23rd, Giffords will be joined by Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn and Attorney General Mark Herring for campaign stops for candidates Katie Sponsle and Debra Gardner, as well as Delegates Rodney Willett and Dr. Dawn M. Adams in Chesterfield and Henrico.
Gun safety will be a priority in this election. In 2019, Virginians voted for Democratic majorities into both the House of Delegates and the State Senate. Gun violence prevention was a top priority for Virginia voters. Since then, the Commonwealth has made a great deal of progress, implementing universal background checks, authorizing extreme risk protection orders, and restoring a limit on handgun purchases to one per month, to name a few.
