Gabby Giffords: “President Biden will never stray from our mission to end gun violence”
President Biden addresses urgent need for gun safety laws in his State of the Union address.
Washington DC — Tonight at the State of the Union, President Joe Biden called for more action against our country’s unique epidemic of gun violence. In 2022, President Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first federal gun safety law in nearly 30 years, but he made it clear tonight that he’s not done yet.
Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, founder of gun violence prevention organization GIFFORDS, was in attendance at the State of the Union and released the following statement:
Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords
“Tonight, President Biden confronted the state of our country’s gun violence epidemic head on. Too many Americans are dying every day, and I know he will never stray from our mission to protect communities from gun violence. My friend Joe was with me during my darkest days, and when he became president, he kept his promises and fought gun violence with urgency. When he meets survivors, he stands with them in their pain and understands their grief; it strengthens his commitment to the American people and toughens his resolve against the gun lobby. He offers thoughts and prayers, but most importantly, he follows through with action. That’s the leadership Americans want to keep in the White House.
“Gun violence is more than a kitchen table issue for voters. It’s a raging crisis that leaves too many tables with an empty seat. Elected officials, Democrats and Republicans alike, must follow President Biden’s lead and take action against gun violence.”
