Senate GOP shuns gun lobby, unanimously embraces Pam Bondi

WASHINGTONGIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement in response to Senate Judiciary Republicans’ unanimous decision to advance Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as President Trump’s pick for U.S. Attorney General. The major gun lobby organizations voiced serious concerns about Bondi’s nomination and had begged Republican senators to press her on gun rights—asks that those senators chose to ignore.

“For decades, the gun lobby had an iron grip on congressional Republicans, but times have changed. Judiciary Committee Republicans completely ignored the demands of the gun lobby to press Pam Bondi about her stances on popular gun violence reduction measures like red flag laws,” remarked GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “Unanimously ignoring a frenzied gun lobby would’ve been unthinkable just a few years ago.”

“The fact is no typical gun owner spends their days obsessed with weakening background checks, abolishing the ATF, or legalizing machine guns—but those are the priorities of today’s extreme gun lobby,” Brown added. “Republican senators can see that the gun lobby’s rapid descent into extremism means they no longer speak for actual gun owners.”
