GIFFORDS PAC endorses Mikie Sherrill for governor of New Jersey

WASHINGTON —Today, GIFFORDS PAC, the national gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, endorsed U.S. Representative Mikie Sherrill in her campaign for governor of New Jersey. Sherrill has spent years working on behalf of Garden State residents, having been first elected to Congress in 2018, and having served our country as an assistant U.S. attorney and in the U.S. Navy.

“Throughout her life, military service, and in Congress, Representative Mikie Sherrill has shown strong resolve to get things done for her community and a willingness to take on the toughest fights facing New Jersey families,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “In the face of growing extremism and senseless shootings, Representative Sherrill’s commonsense approach to ending gun violence is needed more than ever—and I’m proud to endorse her campaign and stand with her in this critical race.”

“I grew up in a hunting family, I qualified as an expert shot in the United States Navy, and I worked to keep illegal guns off of the streets of New Jersey as a federal prosecutor. And it’s because of that background that I know that strong, common sense gun safety legislation saves lives,” said Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill. “I’m proud to earn GIFFORDS PAC’s endorsement because New Jersey must continue to be a stronghold in our fight to end gun violence. New Jersey cannot afford to elect a governor like Jack Ciattarelli, who voted dozens of times to put more guns in our communities and against critical, life-saving protections like background checks. We owe it to our kids to end gun violence once and for all, and I am proud to have GIFFORDS alongside me in that mission.”

In 2018, Representative Sherrill made history by flipping a seat that had been red for over thirty years and becoming the first woman to represent her district. Now in her fourth term in office, Representative Sherrill has made ending gun violence a top policy focus throughout her time in Washington — in particular, she’s been a tireless advocate for expanding background checks, banning bump stocks, incentivizing the safe storage of firearms, securing desperately needed federal funding for research into the root causes of gun violence, disarming domestic abusers, and providing needed appropriations to lifesaving community violence intervention programs. In 2022, Representative Sherrill joined her colleagues in voting to pass the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act — the first major gun safety bill to be signed into law in nearly 30 years.
