GIFFORDS PAC endorses Governor Roy Cooper for U.S. Senate in North Carolina
WASHINGTON — Today, GIFFORDS PAC, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, endorsed former Governor Roy Cooper as he runs to represent North Carolina in the U.S. Senate and flip a crucial seat blue. Governor Cooper is a tested gun safety champion, who—as a gun owner himself—knows that safer gun laws and responsible gun ownership go hand in hand.
“Governor Roy Cooper is a true public servant, and I’ve seen over the years how dedicated he is to ensuring the safety of every North Carolinian,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “He’s proven that he’s not afraid to stand up to gun lobby CEOs to save lives, and that his top priority is protecting children and families across the Tar Heel State from violence and crime. That’s the kind of strength we need in Washington right now. Governor Cooper is a fighter who belongs in the US Senate, and I’m proud to endorse him in this race.”
“I’m grateful for the endorsement of GIFFORDS PAC and their important work preventing gun violence across the country,” said Former Governor Roy Cooper. “I look forward to working in the Senate to protect North Carolina families and build safer, stronger communities.”
Governor Cooper has served North Carolina for nearly four decades—from his time in the North Carolina House and as the Majority Leader in the North Carolina Senate, to working as the state’s top law enforcement official during his four terms as attorney general, and as governor for the last eight years. In each role, Governor Cooper has spent his time in office fighting for commonsense gun laws—notably establishing North Carolina’s Office of Violence Prevention, creating the NC Safe Initiative to incentivize secure storage practices, and issuing important vetoes as governor when Republicans attempted to roll back crucial gun laws.
In Washington he will continue this work by fighting to disarm domestic abusers, stop the proliferation of untraceable ghost guns, ban assault weapons, and close dangerous loopholes in our national laws that put too many innocent people at risk. He will also work to support police and ensure that critical law enforcement agencies like the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) have the full funding needed to reduce and prevent gun crime.
