GIFFORDS responds to Trump takeover of DC law enforcement
WASHINGTON — GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement after President Donald Trump announced the federalization of Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department and deployment of National Guard troops into the city.
“This stunt will succeed in making headlines, but it won’t make DC any safer. If Donald Trump was actually interested in fighting crime, he’d work harder to stop the flow of guns into our cities. Instead, he and Republicans in Congress take millions in donations from gun CEO donors and then gut the laws that keep us safe,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “We need leaders who will take on the gun lobby and stop gun crime: putting gun traffickers behind bars, improving background checks, boosting funding for local cops, and closing loopholes that make it easy for criminals to get guns.”
In just the past few months, the Trump administration has taken many actions that put Americans at increased risk of gun crime. The administration:
- Effectively legalized machine guns
- Attempted to defund law enforcement
- Cut $1 billion in school mental health grants
- Pulled violence intervention workers out of communities
- Deleted Surgeon General webpage with advisory on gun violence
