Like Trump, Rep. Ciscomani ignores gun crime
Guns remain the #1 killer of American children and teens
WASHINGTON — GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement on the ongoing failure of Representative Juan Ciscomani (AZ-06) to listen to Arizonans and support meaningful, bipartisan actions to protect communities from gun crime. In this week’s 2026 State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress, President Donald Trump failed to mention the epidemic of gun violence, the leading killer of American kids and teens.
Throughout his career, Ciscomani has sacrificed Arizonans’ safety and done favors for his gun industry CEO campaign donors. He fights against closing loopholes to keep guns away from dangerous people, putting Arizona families at risk of violence. He even opposes background checks on all gun sales, a commonsense, bipartisan policy supported by 9 in 10 Americans.
“Like Donald Trump, Juan Ciscomani shows how out of touch he is with what voters care about. This week the president not only lied to families who are struggling to afford groceries, he deliberately ignored the epidemic of gun violence, the number one killer of young people in this country — just like Juan Ciscomani,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “It’s unacceptable that our broken policies force parents to worry every time they send their child to school, to a concert, or out with friends. Americans across the political spectrum are crying out for leaders who will stand up to gun industry CEOs and pass commonsense laws to stop gun crime and save lives — just wait for November.”
While President Trump and House Republicans attempt to take credit for recent decreases in crime, they in fact inherited the current trend. Crime has been steadily falling since 2022, in part because of investments and changes from the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act passed that summer. The president and this Congress have systematically undermined gun violence prevention efforts and made it easier for criminals to access guns and used federal law enforcement to further endanger communities.
