Gabby Giffords remembers the Oxford High School shooting
WASHINGTON — GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement remembering the students who were shot and killed at Oxford High School in Michigan nearly four years ago. The shooting, which took place in Oxford Township on November 30, took the lives of four teenagers and injured seven more people. In the months following the shooting, Michigan legislators took important steps to fight gun violence by passing commonsense measures including red flag laws, safe storage laws and universal background checks.
“My heart is with the four young students that were stolen from us far too soon. They should all still be here today, living full and happy lives,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “I’m also thinking of those who were injured and other survivors of the shooting, and the community that was forever changed. In the aftermath of this tragedy, Michigan has made important strides to protect communities from future violence, but there is still work to be done.”
In the past year, Michigan made important strides in gun safety. Lawmakers voted to expand Medicaid coverage to include community violence intervention services, promote safe gun storage, enhance Michigan schools’ ability to respond swiftly to emergency threats, and require the Michigan State Police to keep dangerous firearms out of communities. Lawmakers also made the crucial move to crack down on the sale of unregulated and untraceable ghost guns, and to regulate deadly bump stocks.
